Ionion: Corfu: The island is mountainous and its northern centre lays Mount Pantokrator, the highest mountain of Corfu, which rises to an altitude of 914 metres. Corfu is the second largest island of the Ionian group after Kefalonia. The first island to welcome and open its doors to tourism was Corfu. Zakynthos: Zakynthos also called Zante, is the southernmost island of the Ionian Islands. Smugglers Cove has to be the most famous beach on the Zante if not in Greece. Zante is also famous because its unspoiled natural environment is home to the endangered specie of sea turtle called Caretta-Caretta. Zante is located 17 nautical miles away from the Peloponnese and 13 nautical miles south of the island of Kefalonia. Kefalonia: The island of Kefalonia is located between Lefkada, in the north, and Zakynthos (Zante), in the south. Kefalonia inspired the writer Louis de Bernieres its famous book, entitled “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” The prefecture of Kefalonia also includes the islands of Ithaca, Kastos and Kalamos. Ithaca: Ithaca is famous for being the island of the mythical Odysseus (Ulysses). This wonderful, verdant island is separated from the island of Kefalonia by a narrow canal, only 3 kilometres wide. Ithaca capital, Vathy, has one of the world's largest natural harbours. Kythira: The island of Kythira lies at the point where the Aegean meets the Ionian Sea and is nearer to Crete than its closest Ionian neighbour, Zakynthos (Zante). Since ancient times Kythira is related to the myth of Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty and Eros. Kythira is 120 navy miles far from the port of Piraeus. Lefkada: The island of Lefkada, also called Lefkas, is the fourth largest island of the Ionian Islands, after Zakynthos (Zante), Kefalonia and Corfu. Lefkada is the only island of the Ionian Islands that can be reached by road. The capital of the island is also called Lefkada and is located in the north-eastern part of the island.
